All interested volunteers are asked to attend a two-hour Indy Reads Orientation session. The orientation provides an overview of adult literacy issues, the mission and work of Indy Reads, and our available volunteer opportunities. There is no cost to attend. Please note that attending this orientation is a prerequisite to register for training and to be a volunteer for Indy Reads.
All orientations and trainings are held at the Indy Reads office (except where noted) at the Central Library at 40 East Saint Clair Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204. Parking is available in the Central Library garage located off of Pennsylvania Street, a southbound one-way street. Street parking is also available.
Literacy Tutor Training
Volunteers who would like to be Literacy Tutors are required to attend 15 hours of training. Training will provide an overview of tutoring methods and techniques, lesson planning, student goal setting, and available tutoring resources. Training is $25. This covers the cost of all training materials.
English Language Learner (ELL) Tutor Training
Volunteers who would like to be ELL Tutors are required to attend 15 hours of training. Training consists of an overview of ELL tutoring methods and techniques, cultural awareness, lesson planning, student goal setting, and resources available for use. Training is $25. This covers the cost of all training materials.
Reading Coach Training/Literacy Labs
Volunteers who want to be Reading Coaches are required to attend 6 hours of training. Training consists of learning how work with students at different literacy lab and criminal justice sites, activities to use, and other important information. Most sites are located within an adult education class, or in a criminal justice setting. Training is $25, which covers the cost of the training materials.
