Student Eligibility & Policies
To be eligible for Indy Reads services, prospective students must:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Agree to meet in a public place such as the library.
- Be able to get to the tutoring site without assistance from the program or the tutor.
- Demonstrate the ability to pay attention for thirty minutes.
- Demonstrate a desire to learn.
- Demonstrate behavior appropriate to learning and working with a tutor.
- Being respectful towards others
- Using appropriate language
- Working quietly with tutor
- Maintaining personal hygiene
- Arriving to sessions free of drugs and alcohol
- Meet with the tutor for at least three hours of instruction per week for one year.
- Have no felony conviction for a violent or sexual crime.
- Agree to the Indy Reads Creed
For literacy (reading, writing, and spelling) instruction,
prospective student must:
- Be able to give basic information without assistance from others.
- Score at or below the 6th grade on the literacy assessment.
- See well enough, to read large-print [18-point type] letter or words.
- Use a pen/pencil to write or be able to use a keyboard to write.
For English (English as a Second Language) instruction,
prospective students must:
- Be at the beginning level for speaking English.
- See well enough, to read large-print [18-point type] letter or words.
- Use a pen/pencil to write or be able to use a keyboard to write.
To stay in the program, students must:
- Attend scheduled tutoring sessions.
- Arrive on time.
- Notify the tutor in advance of planned absence or expectations to be late.
- Show measurable progress over time.
- Have a continued desire to learn.
