Mission
We believe everyone should have an opportunity to learn to read.We bring together dedicated adult learners and trained volunteers for their mutual growth and for the good of the community.
Our Mission: Indy Reads seeks to improve the literacy skills of adults in Central Indiana who read or write at or below the sixth grade level.
We believe that all eligible adult learners are entitled:
- to be treated with respect as adults
- to set their own goals
- to have reasonable preferences regarding learning styles, learning environment, materials and instructional strategies accommodated
- to expect confidentiality
We believe that all eligible volunteers are entitled:
- to be matched with learners who have met eligibility requirements and who have, in the judgment of the literacy program, the potential to improve their literacy skills
- to receive support services and assistance with their tutoring as needed
- to have their contributions acknowledged and appreciated
We believe in non-discrimination with respect to all people, but especially with regard to volunteers and to adult learners.
We do not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color, national origin, ancestry, ethnicity, disability, gender, age, physical appearance, sexual orientation or familial status.
