it will open doors for our students.
Minimum requirements to serve as an Indy Reads volunteer:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Attend a volunteer orientation.
- Adhere and accept the Indy Reads Creed.
- Complete required trainings and in-services.
- If possible, make a one-year commitment to the program.
- Report time volunteered.
- Have no violent or sexual felony convictions.
- Demonstrate appropriate behavior when working with staff, volunteers, and students. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Being respectful towards others
- Not using offensive or sexually explicit language
- Conduct perceived as harassing, threatening, or disruptive
- Not being under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs during volunteer times
- Volunteers interested in serving as a Literacy or an English as a Second Language tutor must:
- Read a minimum of three levels higher than the assigned student.
- Be willing to commit to approximately 3 hours of instruction per week for one year.
- Agree to meet at an approved tutoring site - library branches or public places.
- Communicate regularly with assigned student - meeting times, dates, expectations, progress, etc.
- Communicate regularly with Indy Reads staff regarding student's progress, concerns,etc.
- Complete required reports and assessments.
