THEN, SIGN UP FOR A Volunteer Orientation:
All interested volunteers are asked to attend an orientation session that provides an overview of literacy issues, the mission and work of Indy Reads, and the available volunteer opportunities. There is no cost. Please note that attending an orientation is a prerequisite to register for training and to volunteer for Indy Reads.

All orientations and trainings are held at the Indy Reads office (except where noted) at the Library Services Center 2450 N. Meridian Street, Indianapolis, IN 46208 (the parking lot entrance is off of 24th between Meridian and Illinois). There is ample, well lighted parking and a security guard on duty.

Literacy Tutor Training
Volunteers who would like to be Literacy Tutors are required to attend 15 hours of training. Training will provide an overview of tutoring methods and techniques, lesson planning, student goal setting and resources available. Training is $25. This covers the cost of the textbook and supplemental materials. A minimum of 6 participants must be registered for training to be held.

NOTE: All volunteers interested in become "Reading Coaches" must also go through the regular Literacy Tutor Training. (Reading Coaches volunteer for as little as two hours a month in a community literacy lab to help adults with basic correspondence, deal with bills, and assist adults in other basic reading and writing tasks.)
English as a Second Language Training
Volunteers who would like to be English-as-a Second Language (ESL) Tutors are required to attend 15 hours of training. Training consists of an overview of ESL tutoring methods and techniques, cultural awareness, lesson planning, student goal setting, and resources used. Training is $25. This covers the cost of the textbook and supplemental materials. A minimum of 6 participants must be registered for training to be held.
Student Interviewer Training
Volunteers who would like to be Student Interviewers are required to attend 6 hours of training. Literacy or ESL tutor training is optional and not a prerequisite to volunteer as an Interviewer. Training will consist of learning how to administer the student assessment tools, interviewing techniques, and the process for orientating a new student. Training is $10. This covers the cost of the training materials.
Computer Lab Consultant Training
Training for volunteers interested in being Computer Lab Consultants is on an as-needed basis. Volunteers should be comfortable with using computers. For more information, contact Indy Reads at 317-275-4040.
